Recommended gear and general fishing tips for new/beginning porgy fishermen. These recommendations are based on trial and error over my first two seasons catching porgies in Connecticut near shoreline Long Island Sound waters at my recommended depths of 25-50 feet. Fishing experience developed on low wave forecast days in a Starcraft 14'3" FS14 boat. This video is intended to make it easy for beginners and kids to have good experiences fishing for porgies without breaking the bank getting set up. These recommendations can be modified and applied to larger boats, deeper waters and pier fishing. Update, GHOTDA Fishing Spinning 7000 series also recommended a well as 6000 series. the DC series handle is easier to wind than the YO series which have an odd handle. The DC7000 may be more robust and a better choice than the entirely adequate DC6000. The new model Bass Pro Shops/Cabelas Whupping Stick WS66MLS-2 is an improvement over the previous cork handle model and is highly recommended for porgy fishing.

After each salt water use clean without getting water inside reel, it rusts very easily if water salt or fresh gets inside and is not removed. Carefully unscrew drag knob and then remove spool carefully, clean, allow to dry, and then lubricate with a high quality synthetic lubricant. Carefully reassemble when done..
