I had just run this beautiful juicy massive stout of a rapid called Supernova and was paddling downstream to meet the raft and Adriene Levknetch, the other kayaker on the trip. I saw Adriene sprint towards the raft and started to do the same.

Many teams have run this section of the White Nile, the Murchison section, without a raft. It has the highest concentration of hippos and crocs on the Nile maybe the planet, often problem crocodiles are captured and released into the section.

When the hippos or crocs charge getting pulled into a raft and consolidating as a one big unit wards off the beasts and makes the trip overall much safer. When you are a group of kayakers all you can do is sprint and try to get into a big rapid before the croc catches up.

I looked over my shoulder and saw the croc, I saw its head lift as it accelerated through the water towards me. I knew I was close enough to the raft and far enough from the croc to be in serious danger so I just looked forward and was pulled in with plenty of time, I turned on my GoPro...

We spent more time in the raft after this and my desire to return to run the entire section in one day disappeared.
