Edit: JAN-22-24 Lynn Wheelwright reached out and let me know that the NAMM status of this guitar was a crossed story. He had purchased this off eBay in the early 2000s from a prestigious collector who had many fancy guitars. The exact history of this one is now a mystery, but the info in this video still holds up otherwise.

📚 Description: This is a Gibson "Custom Shop Edition" Crest that is believed to have been a NAMM Show display piece from the early 80s. When I purchased it from its 2nd owner, I was told it was originally purchased by Lynn Wheelright and he had it for quite some time. The 2nd owner decided to part ways with it due to it not fitting into his collection.

This is based on the late 60s/early 70s Gibson Crest Gold and Crest Silver models which were very fancy ES-330 like guitars that utilized Brazilian Rosewood instead of Maple. Seeing as Gibson stopped using Brazilian Rosewood in the late 60s, these are some of the very few guitars that got Brazilian Rosewood on them in the 70s. Outside of a few select pre-historics, the Brazilian Rosewood Top Les Paul Custom is the only other that I'm aware of.

I believe this to be a guitar that started life in the early-to-mid 70s that never got completed and was then later put together in the early 80s before Kalamazoo shut its plant down in 1984. The 1983 Tim Shaw bridge pickup is the only thing that dates to '83 on it - but the presence of a "Custom Shop Edition" decal makes me believe this was finished in 1983. All other electronics date to mid/late 1980.

I nicknamed this one "The Hippo" due to the hippo-like pattern wood grain pattern on the back.

This is one fancy guitar!
