Itchy skin in menopause can be a really common symptom and affect your day to day life in a number of ways.

In today's video, I go over the various causes of itchy skin because once you know what's causing it, then you can do something about it to help yourself.

There are five main reasons why you might have itchy skin in menopause:

1. articaria / histamine
2. dehydration
3. low blood sugar levels
4. formication
5. stressed liver

On the point of histamine, it's involved in the immune system and can be found in certain foods. If you have damage to your stomach lining, you might be lacking in a certain enzyme called Diamine Oxidase which helps you break down histamines.

If you're deficient in this enzyme you might get certain symptoms when you eat or drink foods high in histamine.

HIstamine symptoms:
- headaches / migraines
- blocked sinuses
- diarrhoea
- asthma
- palpitations
- red skin
- hives, itchiness
- vertigo when you stand up / low BP

Foods high in histamines:
- fermented foods
- alcohol
- kombucha
- vinegars
- aged cheeses
- cured meats
- avocados
- canned foods
- chocolate
- black tea
- eggs
- mustard
- nuts
- spinach
- soy
- tomatoes
- strawberries

Foods low in histamines:
- asparagus
- bell pepper
- cabbage
- blue berries
- cauliflower
- green leafy veggies
- white fish
- turkey
- green tea
- liver
- squash
- courgettes

I'd recommend to track your food and the reactions you get to it if you suspect you're lacking in diamine oxidase or sensitive to foods high in histamine. Consider doing regular 48 hour fasts to allow your gut to heal sufficiently so that you no longer need to consider foods high or low in histamines.
