The Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland currently holds the title of the world’s longest tunnel (57.09 km). It is truly a remarkable triumph of modern civil engineering that allows us to cross Europe’s greatest mountains in just half an hour. On the other side of the world, in Eastern Siberia, there is the little-known Severomuysky Tunnel, part of Baikal-Amur Mainline. It is three times shorter (and does not beat any other world record), but the amount of effort needed to build it in such a remote and harsh region is no less impressive.
