Colorado's Escalante Canyon is perhaps one of the most picturesque regions in the state. It's rugged red rocks and canyon walls invoke images of the quintessential wild west. It's no surprise, then, that settlers found the area inviting, if not extremely remote. Two of those settlers brought their skills with them, building two stone cabins, including one by H. A. Smith, a stonecarver who carved his bed out of the solid rock which makes up one of the four walls of his cabin.

Since 2002, CBS 4 (Denver) has teamed up with Colorado Preservation, Inc. to showcase endangered places in Colorado that--if left alone--would disappear from the historic fabric of our state. Colorado Preservation Inc. publishes the annual "Colorado's Most Endangered Places" list to bring attention to these sites in hopes that they can be saved.
