Haruna Ishola Bello, M.O.N. (Member of the Order of the Niger), who lived 1919–1983, was one of the most popular Nigerian Apala musician.

Years before Nigerian independence in 1960, Apala music was developed when amateur musicians would play to wake the people during Ramadan.

Apala is a deeply rhythmical, hypnotic, and powerful musical style that combines the striking nasal-style vocals and traditions of Islamic music, the Agidigbo (thumb piano), and the equally powerful drumming and percussion rhythms and techniques of the Yorùbá people.
