The Royals sent rotation ace Cole Ragans to the mound to start the franchise's first playoff game since 2015 in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series vs. the Baltimore Orioles. Ragans matched the former-Cy Young Award-winner and All-Star Corbin Burnes blow-for-blow in his playoff debut, tossing 6.0 shutout innings and striking out 8 while scattering just 4 hits against. The score would stay deadlocked at 0-0 until the 6th inning when a two-out hit off the bat of Bobby Witt Jr. would drive home Maikel Garcia to give the Royals the lead. A combination of Sam Long, Kris Bubic, and Lucas Erceg would shut down the Orioles in relief of Ragans, with Erceg locking down the final four outs, to give the Royals a 1-0 win and a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-three Wild Card Series.
