The Dorje, also known as the vajra in Sanskrit, is a Tibetan Buddhist symbol that represents a powerful thunderbolt capable of dispelling ignorance while remaining unscathed. When paired with the bell, it embodies the principles of Vajrayana Buddhism, which seeks enlightenment within one lifetime under the guidance of an enlightened teacher. In rituals, the dorjye represents the male principle of skillful means and is usually held in the practitioner's right hand to symbolize masculinity. In contrast, the bell represents the female principle of wisdom and is held in the left hand to symbolize femininity. The union of these symbols is thought to lead to enlightenment. When two vajras cross, they form the visva-vajra, which represents the culmination of all actions as well as the indestructible Wheel of the Good Law. Its purpose in contemporary Tibetan Buddhism is to dispel worldly illusions and remind people of their transformative potential.
