The President of the United States - Jimmy Carter, became the first sitting president to visit Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. His friend, Lieutenant-General Olusegun Obasanjo, the Head of State of Nigeria, welcomed him. Obasanjo had previously been invited to the States; he'd visited Washington in October 1977.
President Carter left Nairobi, Kenya and landed in Lagos, Nigeria, on April 01t.
