Three and a half weeks after winter solstice, I visited Dowth in the afternoon to find that the sun was still shining into its southern chamber. The winter solstice alignment of Dowth South was discovered in 1980 by Martin Brennan and Jack Roberts. In the 1990s, Anne Marie Moroney studied the alignment and found that the sunlight entered the chamber (crossing the sill stone) throughout the whole of winter, from November until early February. The southern passage and chamber at Dowth are much shorter than Newgrange, and therefore admit a wider range of sunsets.
