VI CONCERTS a 2 Flûtes Traversieres / 2 Haubois et Basse

Musicians of today remember Pepusch mainly as the author or arranger of the songs in Gay's Beggar's Opera, that romping persiflage of English society and its love of Italian opera which was such a success in 1728 that Handel was forced as a result to close his opera-academy. Johann Christoph Pepusch was born in Berlin in 1667, the son of a Protestant pastor. At the early age of fourteen he entered the service of the Prussian court, — remaining until he gave his notice at the age of 30 (1698).

After a stay of about two years in Holland, Pepusch made for London, where he led an active and fruitful life as musician, composer, teacher and researcher until his death on the 20th of July, 1752. Pepusch was one of the first musicologists to devote himself to the preservation and renewal of old music.

The Concert of Ancient Music and the Madrigal Society were founded at his suggestion. There is today a renewal of interest in his concertos and sonata cycles for his favourite instrument, the flute.

A central work in his oeuvre are the six Concertos op. 8, which appeared in Amsterdam in 1718. In these pieces four melody parts, grouped in pairs, soar above a thorough bass; in "mixed" scoring this produces ravishing sound effects.

There is today a renewal of interest in his concertos and sonata cycles for his favourite instrument, the flute. They are well-suited to the instrument and, for pedagogic purposes, alternate in a well-balanced way between figurative and cantabile elements. A first series of six sonatas, probably brought to paper during Pepusch's stay in Holland, was published around 1700 by Roger in Amsterdam. The same sonatas were published again around 1707 by Walsh. These were followed ca. 1709 by the second suite of six Sonatas for the flute, republished here.
