Dr. Sisi Yang, a researcher from the Division of Nephrology at the Nanfang Hospital of the Southern Medical University, in Guangzhou, China, reviews her article appearing in the September issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where she examines the relationship between cognitive function and chronic kidney disease. She and her colleagues noted that better cognitive function, including reaction time, reasoning ability, prospective memory, and global cognitive function, is causally associated with a lower risk of chronic kidney disease. They hypothesize that a simple cognitive test given to patients in high-risk categories for chronic kidney disease, may be predictive of new-onset chronic kidney disease. .
