Confused on some of the construction jargon out there? I hear you. Like many industries, it seemingly has its own language that can leave you wondering what the heck people are talking about. In this video, we discuss what "on center" means as it relates to framing measurements and placement.

On-center is a selected dimension, usually 16”, 19.2”, or 24”, by which repetitive framing members (such as studs, floors and roofs) are placed. By setting those structural members on-center, it creates equal weight disbursement and also provides equal spacing for materials like insulation and drywall to attach to.

On center literally refers to the fact that measurements are taken and done from the center of one stud (for example) to the center of the next stud, rather than measuring from the outside or inside of studs.
