Our first interview with Lucky Dube took place in May, 1989, at the very start of his first U.S. tour. Lucky was 25 years old and had just arrived in New York. We'd heard his album "Slave"--that's why we wanted to interview him, but we'd never even seen him perform yet...he was scheduled to perform for the first time at SOB's that coming weekend. As has been documented elsewhere, he brought down the house that night and I'm pretty sure that was repeated at every stop on that tour (and the next, and the next...)

As far as I know, this appearance on Reggae Strong marked Lucky's very first television broadcast in America. Watching this interview now, I am struck by the simplicity of his rapport with Stafford and his lack of pretension; a quality that remained with him as his star rose higher and higher.

It brings a lump to my throat to hear Lucky speak about "the rest of his life" here. In a better world, it should have been much longer.

Rest in Peace and Love, Lucky Dube and Stafford Ashani.
