Neglect of hair can take a heavy toll on how our hair would finally looks. Known to be the most neglected, our scalp hair happens to get the least attention and care compared to other parts of the body. People usually wait till there is visible damage to the hair as most people take their hair for granted.

This comes with adverse consequences including serious damage to the hair health as well as the scalp.

In this educational video, Dr John Watts – a noted dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad – highlights several bad hair habits that we need to avoid to have healthy, glowing and growing hair. He has performed over 2000+ hair transplant procedures.

Bad Hair Habit 1#
Shampoo the Scalp & Not the Hair:
The purpose of shampooing is to clean the scalp and maintain its hygiene. However, many people lose focus and target the hair. If shampoo is used to target the hair instead of cleaning the scalp, the essential oil is lost in the process, says Dr John Watts. Highlighting the first bad hair habit, Dr John Watts.

Shampoo With Conditioner:
Using only shampoo and not using a conditioner can affect hair health in the long run. Since shampooing often strips the hair of essential oil, it can become dry and lead to the formation of split ends. This can be avoided if one uses conditioner after using a shampoo, says Dr John Watts.

Bad Hair Habit 3#
Wrong Drying of Hair:
The way people dry their wet hair after taking a head bath can lead to adverse results for hair if they try to forcefully use a towel for the same. The shearing force used with a towel can break away the weak hair. Some people also blow dry their hair with a dryer using a hot temperature. This is also wrong, says Dr John Watts. “Instead, one can dab a towel to dry wet hair or use a dryer with minimum heat and maintain at least 15-20 cm distance from the scalp,” advised Dr John Watts.

Bad Hair Habit 4#
Don’t Comb Wet Hair: Highlighting the first bad hair habit, Dr John Watts says that directly combing wet hair with lice comb may damage the hair. “Wet hair needs to dry first. Then one can use a wide tooth comb for tangle-free results that do not cause damage to the hair,” he said.

Experimenting with Different Hair Styling Products:
Some people use hair straightening iron, hair curling iron or hot iron to add a stylish look to their hair. All of these are dangerous as they cause more damage to the hair in the long run.

“The peptide bonds of the hair can break or the hair can become brittle with such artificial procedures. Using hair straightening iron, or hair curling iron or hot iron can be fine once a year but should not be used frequently,” warned Dr John Watts.

Using Chemical Hair Gels for Style: Using chemical-laced hair gels can cause the greatest damage to hair when one experiments with different chemical-laced products for styling the hair. Some people prefer wet gel, hard gel or wax – all of which can leave some amount of inflammation on the scalp. “This may lead to hair loss in the long run,” warned Dr John Watts.

Bad Hair Habit 7#
Tight Hair Braids:
Tightly braiding one’s hair in a ponytail by a male or female may lead to traction alopecia, a type of hair loss. “People of the Sikh community often tie their hair tight. You should avoid tight braiding of hair as it may cause permanent hair loss,” said Dr John.

Wearing Hair Extension/Hair Weaving Improperly:
Regularly wearing hair extensions or opting for hair weaving without expert advice or supervision can damage the hair. “This may also lead to traction alopecia and cause loss of hair,” warned Dr John Watts.

Bad Hair Habit 9#
Using Chemical Hair Dye: Regularly opting for chemical hair dyes to colour one’s hair can lead to adverse impacts. This may lead to long-term damage as people are often influenced by TV ads while buying hair colours.
