I started at UMass Amherst in 2018 prior to my physical disability but was still in need of academic support. In my sophomore year my mobility issues began and that is when I started needing a lot more accommodations to be successful on campus and struggled to get everything I needed.

At this current point in time I still do not have all my accommodations in place; for example my university just does not have enough classroom access assistants. Access in higher education is a massive issue for students with disabilities, both physical and intellectual. Much change is needed to give students equitable access, and hopefully this video provides some insight on how you can advocate to have your needs met yourself!

There are plenty more accommodations available outside of what I discuss in this video, so just because I did not mention it does not mean you can’t have it!

I hope this helps and everyone is able to have a successful academic experience - access is your legal right!
