She was pure, innocent; she smiled and cried in his arms. Her parents were horrified, the father even said: "if I had known she was pure, I'd have given her another husband". But Filka reminded him he was drunk when he married; he rushed home and gave Akulina a thrashing, he beat her senseless.
Then Filka enlisted in the army in place of one Ivanov's son, and as was the tradition there, he enjoyed all the privileges of the Ivanov household: he even slept with the daughter and made a fool of the master of the house. Before leaving he said goodbye to Akulina, she was very courteous: "I wish you no harm gallant lad".
Shishkov couldn't believe his ears, "what did you say?" he asked her "I love him, more than anything in the world" she replied. The next day he harnessed the horse, brought Akulina out into the fields, told her to pray, grabbed her by the hair and cut her throat.
At that moment Luka dies, Shishkov recognises him: he is Filka, the orderlies come to take away the body and the prisoners drag the cursing Shishkov off Luka's body. The old prisoner comments "he too was some mother's child".
