In the first (and only) Helianthus devlog, I'll show you how I created a game from scratch in only eight days using Unity as the game engine, Blender for modelling, Audacity for sound editing, and Gimp for icons and textures!

This last week we ran a community game jam for the Farewell North Discord over on itch, and it was a blast! Everyone had eight days to create a game, from scratch, and submit their results. A little over 70 people signed up and created 20 games, a lot of which were their very first game!

Helianthus is a 3D action/survival type game about an astronaut vacationing on a planet about to be hit by asteroids! Your job is to grow a massive sunflower to climb back to your rocket ship and get to safety. This devlog shows how I came up with the idea, modelled, rigged and animated the 3D astronaut character in Blender, created the gameplay and cutscenes in Unity, and more!
