Although this story is typically considered a historical drama and a warning about fascism (and the way that collaboration with evil inevitably corrupts) there is also a sense in which it's a story of wrath and vengeance. Presented simply as the correspondence between two German friends in the 1930s, one of whom is Jewish, it eloquently depicts one of the men becoming increasingly poisoned by the forces rising in society around him, and the descent into wicknedness that this causes...
