The Washington Capitals' general manager, Brian MacLellan, promised to make changes to the team. During the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas, he mentioned that the team was working on several things but didn't provide many details. He emphasized the need for the team to get younger while remaining competitive. MacLellan made significant changes to the team's roster by trading for 26-year-old Pierre-Luc Dubois, acquiring Andrew Mangiapane and Logan Thompson, and making a big move to revamp the team's defense by acquiring defenseman Jakob Chychrun and signing defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year contract.
