After being unappreciated back in his hometown of Hamburg, Brahms decided to relocate to Vienna in 1862. During his third year in Vienna, precisely in January 1865, he composed his 16 waltzes op.39. Originally written for piano four hands, Brahms later arranged them for piano solo in two different versions – one more challenging and another simplified. Subsequently, the waltzes were also arranged for two pianos.

In Vienna at the time, Johann Strauss was know as the "Waltz King" and was at the height of popularity. Compared to Strauss' waltzes, Brahms' waltzes were considered at the time to be smaller in scale and more simple in character.
