We started our fireflies festival journey from Kasara station which is the nearest railway station to reach Bhandardara. From here we boarded the 10 seater vehicle which will take us to Bhandardara. Situated in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, this picturesque haven is conveniently located approximately 180 kilometers away from both Mumbai and Pune, easily accessible by well-connected rail and road networks. Bhandardara not only offers breathtaking natural beauty but also serves as a gateway to various trekking adventures. As a basecamp for exploring nearby forts like Kalsubai, Ratangad, and Harishchandragad, it caters to the desires of adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Enroute we visited the Amruteshwar Temple. Situated at the entrance of Ratanwadi village. With a rich history spanning over 1,200 years, this temple stands as a testament to the devotion towards Lord Shiva. The proximity of the revered Ratangad Fort further enhances its significance. The architectural grandeur of the Amruteshwar Temple shines through with its Hemadpanthi style, adorned with exquisite rock carvings that embellish the main shrine. However, reaching this sacred site by road can be challenging due to the rugged terrain of the hills.Next it was time to move further towards our campsite. We reached our lakeside campsite by the evening. Kajwa (Fireflies) are well known to everyone. But in Maharashtra, Kajwa Festival is celebrated widely before a monsoon. Millions of fireflies can be spotted in the surrounding forest of Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife sanctuary. Witness a breathtaking spectacle as you gaze upon the mesmerizing display of thousands of fireflies illuminating the night sky. These enchanting creatures not only captivate with their dazzling light show but also engage in a fascinating form of communication. Through flickering lights, they convey their intentions and desires, particularly during their courtship rituals. Males use flashes to signal their readiness to mate, while females respond with their own flashes, expressing their attraction.This natural phenomenon occurs from the last week of May to the third weekend of June.
