An American Airlines Airbus A320-214 registration N119US, performing flight AAL1625 from Portland International Airport (KPDX) to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX) after departure requested level off at 5000 feet to work out the problem. The crew declared MAYDAY, reported that they had to shut down the engine and requested return to Portland Airport.
