The original Venezuelan Bolivar dates to 1879. It was the new currency that was supposed to replace the Venezolano currency of the era. The series was named after the liberator of the country, Simon Bolivar and you can find his portrait on many of the banknotes issued by Venezuela. Other notable Venezuelans from the past are also pictured on the Bolivar banknote to this day. Over the years the official currency in Venezuela has changed 3 times. As the economy of Venezuela deteriorated the denominations kept getting bigger and bigger. The Bolivar Fuerte replaced the original Bolivar and today the Bolivar Soberano is the currency in circulation. The largest denomination issued was 100,000 Bolivares Fuertes and it was part of the Fuerte series. Today the 50,000 Bolivares Soberanos is the largest denomination in circulation but, as time goes on the currency loses more and more of its value on the market.
