So, I hear it all the time, "walk, walk, walk, your gaited horse." While I believe having an excellent walk is great, some walks are bad and there is no need to walk for months to get a good gait (unless you have a very young horse, then you should only do short rides).

A big walk or pacey walk or camel walk sets the horse up to pace when they go faster. Only let the horse walk fast IF you see a head nod, showing it is a flat walk. If the head is moving SIDE TO SIDE, this is a pace and should NOT be allowed.

How do you fix it? Well, you work on softness and head down. Then you work on leg yields and walking over poles. Backing up with the HEAD DOWN, on the ground or under saddle can help too.

Walking over poles is one of the easiest exercises to help a horse's walk. It must be done with head down and good forward energy.
