I had been having problems with starting the engine for about six years with an intermittent fault. The fault was that on turning the starter key the starter motor would make a "clunk" noise as the pinion moved to engage with the teeth on the flywheel. The engine would not be turned and so would not start. This fault occurred about once a month when cruising initially but was becoming more frequent and sometimes several times in succession.
The starter was removed and professionally rebuilt with several new parts. The rebuilding was done ( after a google search ) by ICS ONLINE LTD, Preston, Lancashire, England.
