Not all death is a tragedy. Seeing a majestic animal like this Gray Whale in such a state can be profoundly emotional. I’ve never done well looking at death, but I’ve learned over the years just how vital whale carcasses are to the ecosystem. When a whale dies, it doesn’t just provide for the ecosystem, it BECOMES an ecosystem itself. While still on the surface it’s a crucial food source for sharks and pelagic birds. When the whale sinks to the bottom it’s referred to as a “whale fall”, providing vital food and resources for thousands of animals. Absolutely no part of this whale will go to waste.
