Salvage work is expected to begin soon on the Costa Concordia, currently resting in shallow waters off the island of Giglio but precariously close to a 70-meter drop. The stricken Italian cruise ship weighs 114,500 tons and is holding 2,400 tons of fuel oil. In a worst-case scenario, tides or a storm surge could cause it to slide and sink to the depths below.
