Brothers Helmut (Bill Nighy) and Karl Hoffmann (John Shea) grow apart during World War II. Swept away by the hysteria of the Third Reich, blue-collar Karl becomes a storm trooper, but struggles to advance because of his lack of education. Helmut, a literature student at the University of Munich, disappoints his adviser, Professor Rosenberg (José Ferrer), by dropping out to join the SS. Both brothers fall for torch singer Mitzi (Lucy Gutteridge) -- though only one will live to regret his actions.

As the film takes place over a span of thirteen years (1932–1945), the main characters of Helmut and Karl are shown to join the SA, SS, and the army with various career paths. This film first aired on NBC on February 17, 1985.
