The most popular communist car in the world is, surprisingly, not even from the Soviet Union. The plastic "Trabant" produced in the GDR in 1957 is a symbol of socialism and Germany's most hated car, but it was actually far better than its reputation. Definitely not "the worst car ever made", as some haters called it. The leaders of East Germany at the time were looking for a quick answer to the "people's car" that had appeared to West Germans, the Volkswagen Beetle. Unfortunately, there was only one big problem: the lack of metal in eastern Germany. As a result, the car had to be assembled from a newly invented plastic called Duroplast. Today I will tell you about whether the Trabant was actually plastic, how it managed to survive with a 17-horsepower engine and how it has survived almost 30 years of production unchanged. Finally, we will discuss why Germans waited in line for 13 years for a car and how the Trabant turned from a joke into a cult car.
