On July 2, 121 people died in a stampede at a satsang organised by the foundation of Suraj Pal Singh, aka Bhole Baba, in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. Bhole Baba, a retired police constable, has amassed a lot of wealth and is known to be well-connected; most of his followers are from the Jatav community, to which he also belongs. THE WEEK visited the site of the satsang to find grim-faced policemen, angry youths and the remnants of the tragedy.
