The rocks on the Gettysburg battlefield were there at the time of the battle. Soldiers stood on them, fought around them, and bled on them. Following the war, many were given names, and inscriptions were chiseled into them. In many cases, the rocks are monuments every bit as much as those erected by the veterans.
