A few weeks before finishing his six-year term as Chief Executive, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte assured the public of his Administration’s continued commitment to give a comfortable life for all Filipinos as he witnessed the ongoing construction of the Philippines’ first-ever Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP).

The MMSP, through a joint partnership between the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is the country’s first underground railway system and one of the monumental projects under the Build, Build, Build Program of the Duterte Administration.

In his speech during the lowering of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and inspection of the Subway Depot, President Duterte commended the DOTr and its partners for achieving a significant progress for the MMSP, which will soon give the commuting public a convenient, comfortable and modern transportation system.

“It will likewise allow travelers to save much time and energy, thereby giving more opportunities to become more productive and more focus on other worthwhile endeavors,” the President said.

He also expressed his hopes that the new President will continue to build on the foundations that his Administration had laid down in terms of infrastructure projects since 2016 so that the promise of ‘comfortable life for all’ will live on.

Likewise, the Chief Executive encouraged his fellow workers in the government to continue pursuing big-ticket projects that “will sustain the country’s ongoing economic recovery and realized goals of the Filipino people.”

“Let us then look to the future with courage, optimism and confidence as we move forward to a more progressive and robust Philippines,” President Duterte said.

The construction of the MMSP Phase 1 is ongoing and will have 13 underground stations traversing six (6) cities in the National Capital Region (NCR). These include Valenzuela City, Quezon City, Pasig City, Makati City, Taguig City and portions of Parañaque City. It will further extend to the north and south of Metro Manila.

The subway stretches for 33 kilometers from Valenzuela City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 and is expected to cut travel time to just 35 minutes. Once completed, it is projected to accommodate 370,000 passengers per day.
