U.S. President Joe Biden arrived in Ottawa for a 27-hour visit, where he will meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and speak to a joint session of Parliament.

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden began their trip north by meeting with Gov. Gen Mary Simon.

They were then taken to Rideau Cottage where they were greeted by Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, ahead of a private gathering.

Both leaders will hold formal talks today on Parliament Hill on matters such as protectionism, migration, the war in Ukraine and the situation in Haiti.

The U.S. and Canada have already struck a deal on asylum seekers crossing the northern border, which is expected to be officially announced during the president’s visit.

The U.S. has agreed to extend a bilateral treaty known as the Safe Third Country Agreement, so that it applies along the entire 8,900 kilometres of the shared border.

It only applied when migrants used official entry points. Now, it will apply at unofficial crossings like Roxham Road in Quebec.

An official who spoke on the condition of anonymity says Canada will agree to welcome an additional 15,000 migrants over the next year.
