In this video, I show you how to protect banana plants from cold in a cheap and easy way. By protecting bananas from cold with this method, you can grow bananas for fruit in cold climates that get hard freezes. I'm growing bananas for fruit in Zone 8A successfully 3 years in a row!

Bananas are not a fruit tree. They are herbaceous pseudostems that grow from an underground corm, similar to a rhizome or bulb. While the corm itself can survive hard freezes, the pseudostems cannot. A hard freeze will kill them to the ground. Most bananas take 18-24 months to complete a fruiting cycle, so if you want to grow them in a place that sees hard freezes, they must be protected. I've been successful at fruiting dwarf banana varieties with this cheap, easy cold protection method.
