In this episode I use the Alex Snodgrass method of setting up a bandsaw to dial in mine and get it cutting like a champ. There’s a bump in the road along the way too.

Snodgrass method step by step.

1. Uplug your saw. Keep those fingers full length.
2. Start with a clean saw, free from dust and debris, you dont want a stray wood chip messing with your whole setup
3. Slacken off the blade using the lever at the back of the machine. Now remove. I recommend gloves for this.
4. Make sure all guides are out of the way.
5. Install new blade and retention. Push in left corner to check deflection. 1/4” deflection without your finger turning white is about right.
6. Bring guides back into place. Side guides should support the front of the blade just behind the teeth close but not quite touching, and the rear guard should be snug to the back of the blade without touching. If your bearings rotate when you turn the blade then you’re too close.
7. Level table. Trick. Make cut on 2x4 then turn and fit on back of blade. This tests full length rather than just one side or other but an engineers square is better than nothing.
8. Finally align your fence to your blade using a ruler to accentuate the blade angle and bring the fence up alongside and adjust to be parallel. A “FAST” or bandsaw buddy can be useful here too!
