Waldimir Köppen (1846–1940)

1. Köppen’s scheme identifies five major climatic types, with each type designated by a capital letter:
2. The capital letters: A, C, D and E delineate humid climates and B dry climates.

A. Tropical moist climates: All months have an average temperature
above 18 deg C(64 deg F). Because all months are warm, there
is no real winter season.

B. Dry climates: Deficient precipitation most of the
year. Potential evaporation and transpiration exceed
precipitation.

C. Moist midlatitude climates with mild winters: Warm-tohot
summers with mild winters. The average temperature
of the coldest month is below 18 deg C(64 deg F) and above
23 deg C(278F).

D. Moist midlatitude climates with severe winters: Warm
summers and cold winters. The average temperature of
the warmest month exceeds 10 deg C(50 degF), and the coldest
monthly average drops below 23 deg C(27 deg F).

E. Polar climates: Extremely cold winters and summers.
The average temperature of the warmest month is below
10 deg C(50 deg F). Given that all months are cold, there is no real
summer season
