On a 7+ hour flight, I found glassy smooth lift over the clouds until sunset. The phenomenon of atmospheric waves over the mountains. With a west wind blowing over the peaks, clouds form, but do not move with the wind. You can see then constantly forming and disappearing. This allows a glider in the right place to just hover in the smooth lift.
