"If you do accept these two stories [...] one of modernization and one of capitalist development. Both of them essentially function as myths. They are quasi religion for a lot of people who really believe in them and they show up to work and they really think that this is how the world works. When you are faced with evidence that this is not how the world works but you cannot reject those myths because they are so crucial to your kind of perception of the world you have to come up with a third myth that will explain how this magic force got corrupted. And of course, the explanation that these people come up with is 'there was nothing wrong with our theories, it's just that the communist Chinese state has become so powerful that it subverted the magic power of the internet and communications and they did it not because they are cleverer than us but because they steal ... intellectual property. They manipulate public opinion ..."
