If your pool pump won't turn on don't freak out just yet..
Yesterday, our 2hp Pentair pool pump stopped working - it would just click. Today I tried it again and just got a loud hum like something was blocking the impeller.
After turning off the power (IMPORTANT), I took a look at the filter basket, emptied out any debris and checked for blockages - nothing. Still humming.
Priced out whole pumps, motors, etc.. and it looked like I was going to be out of at least $250 for a motor.. until the guy at the local pool store said to check the capacitor!
Warning: This video shows that the capacitor was faulty on my pool pump - please make sure you cut power to your pump before attempting to replace this part. Also, when working correctly, capacitors store energy - wear gloves and use a rubber handled screwdriver to bridge both prongs to disopate any charge prior to removing.
