Sundew leaves are covered with sticky hairs that secrete a sweet smelling substance to attract insects. When insects land on the sticky hairs, the leaf has the ability to detect the nitrogen compounds present in the insect's composition. The detection of nitrogen triggers electrical impulses telling the vacuoles present in the leaf's cells to inflate with water, which causes the leaf to bend. As the prey is ensnared, the tentacles secrete digestive enzymes that break down the insect into nutrients for the sundew.
