Kannaki is a legendary tamil woman who forms the central character of the tamil epic SILAPATHIKARAM . The story relates to how kannaki took revenge on the pandyan king of madhurai, who had wrongfully put her husband named Kovalan to death. She cursed the entire town of madhurai

kovalan was the son of a wealthy merchant of vaishya community in puhar, who married kannaki. then kovalan met a dancer Madhavi and han an affair with her, which promoted him to spend all his wealth on the dancer.at kovalan realises his mistake and returned to kannaki. kovalan hoped to recoup his fortunes by selling the precious anklet of kannaki in madhurai.

Madurai was then ruled by the pandyan king.
when kovalan tried to sell the anklet, it was mistaken for a stolen anklet of the queen. koval was accussed of having the stolen anklet of the queen and was suddenly beheaded by the king without trial. hearing this , kannaki came to the court for proving the innocence of her husband.
kannaki then came to the king's court , broke open the anklet seized from kovalan and showed that ti contained rubies as opposed to the queen's anklets which contained pearls. realizing the fault, the king committed suicide in shame.kannaki uttered a curse that the entire city of madurai be burnt...
