Hakka is a group of Chinese language varieties spoken by the Hakka people in Southern China, Taiwan, parts of Southeast Asia, and overseas Chinese communities. Its usage in isolated regions has led to the development of numerous dialects across different provinces. Taiwan recognizes Hakka as a national language and actively promotes its study and preservation. There are pronunciation differences between the Hakka dialects of Taiwan and mainland China, with two major varieties of Hakka present even within Taiwan.

Cantonese, the traditional prestige variety of Yue Chinese, originates from Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta. With over 85.5 million native speakers, it is crucial to the cultural identity of people in southeastern China, Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas communities. In mainland China, Cantonese is the lingua franca of Guangdong province and neighboring areas like Guangxi. It is the dominant and co-official language of Hong Kong and Macau, and widely spoken among Overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia and the Western world.
