Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is commonly known as SMVDU. SMVDU was founded in 1999 and The University started functioning as an academic unit in August 2004. SMVDU was inaugurated by the ex-president of India Late Shri A.P.J Abdul Kalam. The University is approved by UGC and Accredited by AICTE and Architecture program is recognized by Council of Architecture. SMVDU offers B.Tech, M.Tech, B.Arch, M.Arch, M.Sc, MA and MBA degrees.

SMVDU has over 20 collaborations and houses one college of Nursing (SMVD College of Nursing), four faculties, consisting of 15 Schools. It offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Integrated and PhD programmes in the field of Engineering, Science, Management, Philosophy and other subjects of contemporary importance, with all technical courses recognised by AICTE, CIC and COA. Admissions to the University is granted on both entrance and merit-basis followed by SMVDU Direct Counselling respective to the course.
