The Lister model D stationary engine needs no introduction. It was produced in the U.K. by R A Lister & Co, at Dursley in Gloucestershire (also later elsewhere) between 1926 and 1964. Over 250,000 units were made in that time period. There were variants on the design, but usually produced 1.5 HP at 700 rpm. Probably most of them were used to drive agricultural machinery, but also pumping liquids, generating electricity, whatever: all was grist to their mill. There is an abundance of information on them on line, and indeed an abundance of YouTube videos as well! I only upload this, as it shows how a complete novice - who had always wanted one! - gradually got it going. Often things were done in the wrong order - but it worked in the end. Incidentally, I look as though I am holding the starting handle in the wrong way in one or two shots, but I assure you I am old enough to crank an engine with one's thumb above the crank quite intuitively! When it finally runs, it might be a shade on the fast side - but I have a rev. counter, and will adjust it to 700 rpm soon. The engine even came with water-slide transfers, which will be applied in due course; and I shall make a proper flat brass terminal for the sparking plug and things like that. Incidentally, the serial number of this engine is 1731 DH 11, meaning that it was the 1,731st model 'D' with water 'H'opper cooling (there were other cooling systems) made in the year 11 - which began in 1950, giving us 1961 as the year in which this rather late example first saw the light of day.
