In the first of a projected two-volume life of William Faulkner, Rollyson draws on new primary and secondary resources, along with extensive interviews with Faulkner’s family and friends, to show us this major American author in all his paradoxical complexity. Focusing on Faulkner’s formative years up to the age of 37, Rollyson, the prolific biographer of figures including Sylvia Plath, Susan Sontag, Rebecca West, and Norman Mailer, traces the writer-to-be as he rebelled against conventional family expectations to pursue art, then as he resisted the model of ambitious contemporaries such as Hemingway by staying home rather than widening his horizons in Europe.
