Jammu and Kashmir: Three militants killed in gunfight in Kulgam

The most wanted L E T commander Basit Dar was killed along with other militants in a fierce gunfight with security forces, have been killed in an encounter at Redwani Payeen area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday evening, that a joint team of Police and army launched a cordon off and search operation in Redwani Payeen. As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off a gunfight. The operation was halted for the night due to precautionary measures and was resumed this morning.

The top officer said that it is a big achievement for the forces, as Basit Dar was behind many militant attacks especially in Srinagar. Basit, a resident of Redwani’s Kulgam, who had been missing from his home since three years and joined The Resistance Front, a front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Basit was one of the most wanted terrorists, with a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head. He was considered the mastermind of targeted killings in the Kashmir Valley and was categorized in the A+++ category by the police. Basit often stayed with foreign terrorists and also served as a guide for them.

His elimination is a significant success for the security forces, especially with the Lok Sabha elections approaching in Kashmir.
