Brutalism is a style with an emphasis on materials, textures, and construction, producing highly expressive forms. During the 1960s, Brutalist architecture was dominated by the use of 'beton brut' (raw concrete). Le Corbusier's structures in Chandigarh (Secretariat Building, Palace of Assembly, to name a few) are the benchmark of brutalist architecture in India.
Located in the dense urban context of Science City, Ahmedabad, the house is defined by bare concrete, geometric shapes, a monochrome palette, and a monolithic appearance. The abstract of a traditional image was continued by infusing the interiors with Indian elements as soft touches.
Principal Architects Bhadri and Snehal Suthar explain the design concept of this brutalist yet warm abode in Ahmedabad that creates diverse experiences within its physical form.
