Makar Sankranti is an important festival celebrated in different parts of the country. The day celebrated on January 14 marks the beginning of the auspicious Uttarayanam. Makar Sankranti is an ideal example of unity in diversity. Every state in India has different ways of celebrating Makar Sankranti, but the theme—harvest season—is the unifying factor.

On this day, Lord Surya is worshipped, prayers and thanks are offered, devotees also worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi during Makara Sankranti.

According to legends, Sankranti - after whom the festival is named - was a deity who slew the evil Shankarasura. The day after Makar Sankranti is called Karidin or Kinkrant.
